Bruce Hoover wasn’t quick to talk. But one mention of the outdoor service industry and he opened up like a certified seed spreader.

Owner of Frontier Lawn and Recreation, Bruce moved into the driver’s seat of his Michigan City-based family business in 1985. Frontier Lawn and Recreation specializes in John Deere tractors, outdoor power equipment, sales, parts and more. Bruce also entrusts Horizon Bank with financial responsibilities.
Bruce said his family’s background is in farming. That’s how the business began in 1981. And now, 30-plus years later, the full-service shop keeps on running like a Deere. After such a long time, Bruce admits it would be hard to return to work for someone else.
“I’ve only got one boss and she’s at home,” he said jokingly.
What were your biggest concerns about starting a business?
Bruce Hoover: Just trying to keep up with all the technology coming through, and the different types of machines.
How has your relationship with Horizon Bank helped your business?
We actually switched banks probably five or six years ago when I needed help with an issue. I couldn’t get it done with the other bank and within 15 minutes on the phone, (a Horizon Bank) employee resolved my issue. I never even met him! They do tremendous work. I am very happy with them.
