The Gagie School

For more than 30 years, the Gagie School has prepared children to become very highly contributing members of society with a focus on the individual. The school offers pre-K through 8th grade curriculum and lets students dictate the pace.

We spoke with Sandra as part of Horizon Bank’s “Business Spotlight” series.

Tell us a little about your business.

It’s the premier preschool through 8th grade school in the Kalamazoo area! We concentrate on the individual. It started in my house with six students in the morning, six in the afternoon. Then we started renting a room at the church, and we bought property in 1981.

What sets your business apart?

We look for gifts that children have that may develop in the future. It’s very positive.

Small businesses present challenges. What are some challenges you have faced?

There are so many challenges. I guess I just overcome each one as it comes along. Trying to do the best we can for every child is a challenge. We want to make sure they may be prepared for anything they may meet in the future.

Why did you decide to do business with Horizon Bank?

I like to know my bankers. I moved two or three times with a previous banker then wound up at a (large bank). Some of those banks are so big, so impersonal. If I have a problem, I’d like to know who I can call. Now I have the comfort of knowing the (Horizon Bank) banker knows the school, and his daughter is one of the products. I like the personal touch because I give a personal touch to every one of my customers.
